Polonnaruwa is located at the northeast part of Sri Lanka, 216km northeast to Colombo- capital of the country. It is the main town of Polonnaruwa District in the North Central Province, Sri Lanka. Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993. It comprises, besides the Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas, the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. The Ancient City of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982.

The second most ancient of Sri Lanka's kingdoms, Polonnaruwa was first declared the capital city by King Vijayabahu I, who defeated the Chola invaders in 1070 to reunite the country once more under a local leader.
