The area around present-day Fujisawa has been inhabited for thousands of years. The town of Fujisawa was elevated to city status on October 1, 1940. Then, it was continuously expanded.

For many Chinese people, Fujisawa is known as the place where Nie Er, a talented Chinese composer who made the national anthem of the People's Republic of China, namely the March of the Volunteers, drowned when swimming in the sea near the Kugenuma Beach. On November 1, 1954, with the spontaneous donation of the citizens of Fujisawa, the Monument to Nie Er was established at the Kugenuma Beach. In 1963, the Institute for Conservation of the Monument to Nie Er was established. The monument was rebuilt and expanded for two times later. So far, it has become an important symbol for the friendship between China and Japan.
